I’ve been entering giveaways and competitions for around a year now. I saw someone post about their winnings on Instagram and thought I would try it.
Like everyone, you have your skepticism; I didn’t know if most were just scams to get your details or if there were actual winners! But I didn’t see the harm in trying.
I personally only enter on Instagram. I’ve found this works for me as I have two accounts on there that I don’t use, so I’ve turned them into my ‘comping’ accounts.
The good thing about Instagram is that you only have to tag and follow the company (and sometimes share), so no details are given, and you don’t get spam emails or anything, so it’s a good way to start.
How To Win Giveaways and Competitions
1. Enter as many giveaways as possible. The more giveaways you enter, the higher your chances of winning. Keep an eye out for giveaways on social media, blogs, and other websites. I enter about 30 a day normally. I have a morning routine of going through my competition Instagram each morning and entering the ones I would love to win.
2. Follow the rules: Make sure to read and follow all the rules of the giveaway. If you don’t, you could be disqualified. Every giveaway is different, and if you don’t follow the steps, your tag or entry might not enter, and it’s a waste of your time.
3. Participate in creative contests: Some giveaways require participants to write a blog post or create a video. These types of contests often have fewer entries, increasing your chances of winning. I am part of a fantastic group on Facebook called Lucky Learners. This group is full of heavy compers giving tips and tricks and sharing their wins and other competitions to enter.
4. Share on social media: Many giveaways offer extra entries for sharing on social media. Take advantage of this by sharing on multiple platforms to increase your chances of winning. If you are worried about spamming people, set up dedicated accounts to do this, as I have on Instagram.
5. Use giveaway plugins: Several WordPress plugins can help you create and enter giveaways, such as GiveawaySap and RafflePress. These plugins can also help you grow your email list by requiring participants to sign up.

The advantage of a log-in-required forum is that the competition listings won’t show up on a Google search, resulting in fewer entries compared to those listed on MSE or The PrizeFinder.
Their platform offers a plethora of UK competitions that are free to enter. The community members are welcoming and post over 100 new competitions daily. They also share valuable tips and answers. You can earn the Latest Deal points for your contributions in the forum, which can be exchanged for Amazon vouchers.

However, for brands that are still establishing their presence on social media, achieving this goal can be challenging. The initial number of followers who learn about the contest could be limited, resulting in a low turnout of participants.

To begin your quest for prizes, start by finding local businesses, venues, or tourism boards to follow. This way, you’ll have a better chance of actually being able to redeem any winnings.
- For email contests, simply sign up for companies whose products you enjoy and watch as opportunities flood your inbox. To filter through them, use common contest language such as “enter to win.”
- If you’re a Facebook user, keep a list of local accounts that regularly post contests. This way, you can easily check in and stay up to date on all the latest chances to win.
- On Twitter, you may be able to find lists of businesses or influential accounts that you can follow in columns using apps like Tweetdeck or Hootsuite. Twitter also has a handy geotagging feature that lets you see tweets within a set radius of your location. Using Tweetdeck or an advanced Twitter search, you can run a radius search to find these local tweets. (For example, you can search near: “Washington DC” within:15mi in Tweetdeck or a Twitter search box.) Keep these in a separate column you can glance at over the week.
- To search for specific content on Instagram, tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the home page and use the search function. You can search using hashtags like #ukgiveaway, #giveawayuk, #ukcomp, #ukcontest, #ukcompetition, #competititionuk #creativecomp, and #creativecompetition. After typing the hashtag, tap on the “Tags” header and select the tag from the list. This way, new content with that hashtag will appear on your Instagram feed.
Use ‘autofill’ to complete digital forms quickly
To do this, simply add your details once and your computer will remember them so you can quickly add them with a click next time. Also, save a draft email with your details for any comps that require entry by email.
Keep an eye on your email for responses
It is common to receive notifications of winning through email. It is important to respond promptly to avoid losing the prize to another contestant. To easily identify these emails, try filtering your inbox for keywords such as ‘congratulations’ and ‘winner’, but be sure to thoroughly read each email as the subject line may not always indicate that you are the winner. Don’t forget to check your Junk folder as well.
Bookmark your favourite sites to check regularly
Radio stations often have competitions listed on their website. Supermarkets, magazines and online stores are the same. If you use Chrome, you can bookmark your favourite competition websites to save time.
How to avoid spam competitions
To ensure that you only participate in legitimate competitions, follow these top tips:
• Stick to competitions organised by brands that you already know and trust.
• Install antivirus software to protect your computer, as you will be browsing many new sites each day that you may not have visited before. This will help you verify their authenticity.
• You should never have to pay to enter a competition, except for the occasional stamp to send in your entries.
• Avoid opportunities that require you to call a premium rate number, as you may end up waiting in line while they collect money from your phone bill.
• Be cautious of sites that offer “exclusive” lists of contests specifically for competitors. Avoid paying to view such lists, as they typically only include the most popular competitions, which you may already be aware of if you search for them regularly.
Remember: If a competition requests any money as a deposit after you win, report them to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and distance yourself from them as quickly as possible!
What are the odds of winning competitions compared to winning the National Lottery?
Did you know that the chances of winning a national competition are much better than winning the National Lottery jackpot? Of course, the odds will depend on the number of participants.
